Laser Hair Removal for Men. The Ultimate Guide.

You know that feeling when you look in the mirror and one of the characters from The Jungle Book stares back? Yup, you’ve probably got some unwanted hair. It’s totally normal and most people struggle with it at some point. If you can relate to this scenario, this laser guide is for you.

We’ve got your back for everything you need to know about laser hair removal, including what it is, why it works so well and how we do it at Mansculpt. We’ve put this article full of all things laser hair removal: cost, laser types, and treatment frequency. So let’s get started!

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is a non-invasive procedure that uses laser energy to get rid of unwanted hair. Certain wavelengths of laser light affect hair only, not skin. Laser hair removal works by targeting and heating the pigment in the hair. Energy travels through the skin’s top layer – the epidermis – down into the hair follicle (which is located in the dermis). With each session the hair grows back thinner until some follicles are permanently terminated. Deuces!

Here’s all areas we treat at Mansculpt:

  • Back (full, upper or lower)

  • Legs (full upper or lower)
  • Feet and Toes

So how does it work?

Well, first we need to understand how hair actually grows. Did you know this happens in three stages? That’s right: anagen, catagen and telogen.

The growth stage (anagen) is where hairs connect to roots. Over time, the hair follicle disconnects from the root and enters a transition stage (catagen). It eventually completely falls out (telogen) and the cycle restarts.

Laser hair removal only works on hairs in the first stage. By targeting hairs that still connect to the dermis, it interrupts the growing cycle. This stops new hair from growing completely! Each session stops a few more areas from growing until hair stops appearing altogether.

How many sessions do I need?

In order to get sufficient results, you’ll need to come in every few weeks until we’ve targeted all the hairs at the right stage. We recommend starting with a package of 6 sessions (one session every 6–8 weeks) . Everyone’s different so it’s hard to predict how many sessions you’ll need. Most men need an average of 8 sessions, some 10, others 12. We always asses results after completing a package and adjust from there.

Different types of laser

Chances are you’ve heard about IPL. Then what’s the difference between that and laser? Well, to start, they are both light treatments. The difference is in the way they deliver energy. IPL is what we call “broad-spectrum”. Think of it as a light bulb that illuminates a room. A laser is targeted, like a beam. Similar to the toy ones you might have played with as a kid.

There are several systems available for use in laser hair removal. The most common ones are Alexandrite, Diode, and Nd:YAG. Each type has its pros and cons:

Alexandrite has a wavelength of 755nm and is mainly used for skin types I-III.

Diode can be used for types I-III, possibly IV-VI and uses a wavelength of 800–810nm.

Nd:YAG is most suited for skin types IV-VI and has a wavelength of 1064nm.

How we do it

Here at Mansculpt, we use the Soprano Titanium laser. This new laser combines all three wavelengths into one for maximum power. It’s one of the most effective lasers for removing hair in men as it’s easily adjustable. Soprano Titanium can treat light and dark skin, as well as all skin tones in between. It has been used successfully on patients with dark hair, black hair, red hair, blond hair, brown hair, grey hair, and white hair.

The Soprano Titanium laser is very fast. It can treat an area in less than 30 seconds and prevent burning or scarring (due to its energy delivery without damaging surrounding tissue). This can reduce discomfort for patients who have sensitive skin or who are prone to keloid scarring.

Furthermore, built in is a cooling system (ICE™) so that you don’t have to worry about feeling uncomfortable or experiencing pain during your treatment sessions with us. Still, after treatment we recommend treating the area like a sunburn and avoiding adding heat the first 48 hours. For about a week, try to steer clear of swimming pools, saunas and hot showers. Mansculpt aftercare will be provided after every session and can also be found here.
